Carthage, Tunisia
Oceanographer Robert Ballard led the first expedition to discover a shipwreck below 200’ (60 m) in 1997. This journey uncovered several ancient Roman ships full of well-preserved artifacts dating back as far as 200 B.C. on the floor of the Mediterranean Sea in ancient Carthage. In order to clear the debris field for this mission, Wolf Pump worked with a local company to design a system with a Teflon-fitted pump and a submersible motor to operate at more than 3,000’ (914 m) below water. This system provided a clear view of the ocean floor for the workers and allowed them to explore without damaging the uncovered artifacts.
